Josefin

Handwriting Fonts

Fonts in a hand-written style can make your content seem more personal, and they evoke a feeling of creativity – you can almost imagine someone doodling in their notebook when you see one of these fun fonts. Handwriting fonts are great to use on planners or to-do lists. They also work really well on motivational quotes to share on social media or to print out and hang above your desk for extra inspiration throughout the day!

Decorative Fonts

Decorative fonts tend to be bold and ornate. Because of this, they are generally used for headlines, logos, very short copy, or for emphasis only. They are usually not recommended if you need to share a lot of copy because they can become hard to read at small sizes. 1. Pairing Fonts

Make a bold statement by pairing fonts that complement each other and give your collage a unique focal point. Pick a font that’s more traditional and pair it with a script font for contrast. Here’s a couple of pairings we’ve put together to get your creative juices flowing:

2. Curved Text

Warning: this trick takes a little patience, but it’s actually very easy and totally worth it! Manually curve the text in your collage for a fun way to draw attention to the area you want people to focus on.

Steps:

• Start with a letter text
• Duplicate the letter
• Place the letters across the person/favorite fur baby

3. Transparent Text Effect

Add a text background, then use the color eyedropper tool to match your text to the background color of the collage for a fun transparent effect.

4. Adding Text Backgrounds

One way to make your text really pop is to add a box around each individual letter. So simple, but so impactful!

Steps:

• Add a letter of the word you want to spell out
• Select font style, text color, text background
• Duplicate text 

5. Gradient Texts

Use our color saturation tool to easily create a beautiful gradient, perfect for making cards and any special occasions! We love to keep this trick in our back pocket for when we’re in need of a quick card that looks really special.  

Steps:

• Add text
• Duplicate, then select text color

Now that we know where to go to find text and how to change the color, how do we know that we are choosing a good colors for our collages?

Usually what I would do is figure out the base color of the image: 

In the first image, you can see the base color is primarily black, there are some secondary colors and shades of yellow from the dog’s fur and red/pink from the dog’s tongue. 

The most contrasted color you can use for your text against black is white, if you wanted something more harmonious, you could try a color that has a mix of black and white, which would make grey. If you wanted to make a statement, you could use the color red, making it seem like the message you want to convey is a photo of a dangerous dog. What helps to tie the red color of the text in a bit more is the red color of the dog’s tongue. Choosing colors that are associated with other colors in the photo will help tie in the color theme of the imagery as a whole making it feel like the relationship between colors are more consistent. 

In the second image, the base of the photo is white. We can try to collage this image so that it looks like a handmade message that Garry would to send to his motorbiking friends. If we wanted to focus to be on Garry and the motorbike trip, then we can use the most harmonious text color – white, it blends into the color of the stairs. If we wanted the message to be clearer, black would be a good choice. Choosing blue would add a different flavor to the collage – the blue shade is similar to the jeans Garry is wearing, and at the same time, the contrast is enough so that the words are readable. Using the blue ink also connects the idea of writing on the photo with a blue pen.

Some images have an equal amount of color in them and it’s hard to determine which is the primary color. If you can’t determine one color, you can also list out 2 or 3 colors. In this collage, it is made with a background photo of a yellow wall, with the photo of two friends hugging in a lavendar field. You can see that the base color in the photo is a combination of yellow and bluish-purple. Black would make the words very clear, while using a lighter yellow would make the words a lot more softer, placing most of the focus on the photo of the two girls. The middle photo using purple is an attempt to find a middle ground using the shade of a darker lavender so that you can still see the words, but the color purple will also make them harmonious with the purple colors of lavender. 

In the last example, we can see that the base color is blue – many shades of blue, so then a more simpler treatment of the words is to just use white. For a more dynamic look, you could do a play on color, finding other shades of blue that woud bring out some monotone contrast colors between the words, the sky and the waves. Using white as an accent color can place the main focus on the word “surfing”

Some times you can try new ideas to help your words stand out in a more interesting way. The example below uses different colors on each letter to emphasize the playfulness of the word cute. However this will take a bit of patience because you will need to type out each word and color each one differently. The idea of these 4 letters is to make them stand out, so then although the same color elements can be found in the imagery: dark blue stripes on sweater, yellowish green and pink lining on the rim of the hoodie, but adjusted to a lighter, brighter shade so that they look more cute!

And of course, if all else fails and you can’t seem to find the color and effect you are looking for – often because there might be too many colors in the background making it distracting to add in words, one really simple tip is to add a text background color to seperate the background image and your text so that you can see the photo and your message clearly:

One very important part of a design is the usage of fonts. It can sometimes make or break the emotional message that you are trying to convey. For example, if you want an image to look cool and edgy, using a font that is too cutesy could undercut your theme. You might find yourself unsatisfied with the overall effect, but unsure what your options are to change it.  Never fear – PicCollage is here!  We’ve got tons of great font options and in this article we will break them down into five main categories and show you what you can do with them. When they are shown together, it’s easier to see the differences between them and get excited about what to use them for. 

Now let’s do a font study, and see how each style looks with photos!

The general feeling of being bold is having confidence, courage, and the willingness to take risks. In imagery it can be expressed with a bold splash of color, the boldness of expression, action or emotion that brings stronger feelings to the image.  In a font, it means to make the weight of the letters thicker so that your message is clear. 

Some examples of bold fonts that you can use in PicCollage are Blackout, Lemon Milk, Impact, Bangers and Sunrise. A lot of memes like to use the font Impact becuase of its boldness and clarity.

Modern is clean and futuristic. It is often shown in geometric shapes and sleek lines coupled with cool colors, black or white to make it seem high tech rather than organic. Modern fonts often puts emphasis on consistency, geometric lines, angles and emphasis on readability. 

Some examples of modern fonts you can use in PicCollage are Denver, Helvetica, Ostritch sans, Roboto and Oswald. Namely, Helvetica was one of the first fonts to change the landscape of the print world from hand written designs to layouts using geomoetric fonts.

Elegance can be seen in anything that is graceful and stylish in appearance or manner. We often see elegant fonts used in wedding designs, fashion design, anything that needs to convey a sense of beauty, love, femininity. 

Some examples of elegant fonts in PicCollage are Playfair, Dawning New Day, England Hand, King Basil and Didot. Often times, these fonts will feature beautifully curved lines. Handwritten (Dawning new day, king basil) or script (England hand) fonts also give a romantic feel. The font type is also often a serif font. What’s a serif font? A serif font means that at the foot of the letters within the font, there are lines at the end of the letter strokes, making it look like it’s wearing a shoe. We have another post that explains this more clearly.  With this style, the details make the design.

Friendliness can be seen in a warm smile, a hearty breakfast with friends or family, a cozy corner in your room or furry and loyal animals by your side. The characteristic of a friendly font is often round making them look more approachable. 

Examples of friendly fonts in PicCollage are Museo, Typewriter, Blank Space, Montserrat and Quicksand. You should definitely use these fonts if you want to bring a smile to people’s faces.

Being edgy often means being cool, unconventional, instead of having a round and friendly personality, it is provocative with sharp corners. Examples of edgy fonts in PicCollage are Hudson, Bebas Neue, Thirsty Rough, Impact label and Summer Hearts. You can see that they show a bit more attitude no matter if is in the strong strokes (Summer hearts) or grungy texture (Thirsty Rough, Impact Lable) or cut off edges (Hudson)

Sometimes you will have to do some manual work. In the example above, I felt like the words “love” and “this” are both 4 characters, so it wouldn’t be able to show contrast between the two rows. And what we really want to do is to emphasize the word: “Love.” To make the word “This” smaller, I added 3 spaces between each character.

In the example above, we can see the same trick we used above, we added spaces in between each of the letters in the word “with” to make the word look smaller. There are other ways to make words become smaller, and that is putting two words in one row, like the “is better” above.

Today is a perfect day, for a perfect day. in this example, I felt like it might look even better if we added some decoration, so then I added a line and an embellishment below the words.

How did I find these elements? I used the web search feature and searched for: “white line png.” When you see the images, they will all look white, and you won’t be able to tell the imagery apart. What I usually do is randomly choose multiple images and wait for them to appear in the canvas to see what I’d get. In the example above, I found a white line, and also a pretty embellishment, so I added it below.

The examples that we showed above all have something in common, can you tell what it is? They all were using the same font. If you are getting the hang of using box alignments, you can also try mixing fonts within the box alignments to get a fancier effect

Before we get to the fun part, just want to make sure you know how to find the fonts. When you are in the canvas area, slide the bottom bar to the right and you will find it next to the stickers button. When you get into the interface, press the A with rainbow icon on the left of the text bar.

If you slide the fonts to the right, you will find 45 different English fonts, but do you know that you can create different effects with just one font? All you need to do is adjust the words from lowercase to all caps and/or adjust the spacing between the fonts. To demonstrate how the effect can be like, I’d like to show how 3 different types of fonts will look like when the spacing and upper/lower caps has been changed. The three different types of fonts is san serif, serif and script. 

What’s the difference between a san serif font and a serif font? San serif means that the font does not have any lines at the end of the character. See the difference below:

It can get confusing sometimes, but one really easy way to remember is to treat the word “san” as no: a font that has lines on ends: serif, a font that has no lines on ends, san serif. Easier to remember?

The first type of font we will demonstrate is a san serif font, Quicksand. You can find this and all the other fonts we demonstrate today in PicCollage.

Here is a list of the effect of how the font looks with different spacing and different caps state. Based on what effect you would like your card to have, you can choose the right combination. Below is an example of how a happy birthday card could look differently between all caps that has extra spacing vs regular spacing. What do you think? Which effect do you like better?

The next example is Museo, it is a serif font, do you see the lines at the end of the characters? That’s what makes it a serif font. The chart above shows how the the words “you’re amazing” look with the different changes in all caps/lower caps and spacing.

The example below shows the difference between the words “You’re Amazing” with different spacing. Which effect do you like best?

The last examples is a script font. From this example we can see that there are some fonts that won’t work well with all caps, Thirsty Rough is one of those examples. They also look a bit odd when they are given extra spacing, it could be because in the original design of the font you can see that each stroke should link to the next letter.

Here is the example below. Which font do you think looks better with the photo?

Now that you know this little trick, what you can do is look around in magazines and posters and notice how the professional designers play with their fonts: Do they use serif font or san serif font? are they using all caps? do they have extra spacing?
